Telltale Game’s “The Walking Dead”
is game that tells an emotionally driven story framed by the impact of the
player’s choices. You are can save characters or let them die; you can contribute
ideas to the group. These opportunities to influence the path of the game seem
significant but under closer inspection are very artificial. There are many
instances where your reaction only impacts the other characters feelings
towards Lee. Shawn has to die, as does Larry. In the case of Larry, you are not
even allowed to side with Carlie. This sort of half-role-play hinders the
overall immersion of the game. We are asked to assume the role of Lee to play
the game but his choices are slightly scripted and the results are even more
fixed. To the credit of the developers, it would be difficult to create such an
extensive and complex plot with too many variables and the story they tell is
still quite compelling.
