God. Damn. When I started this game, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. Playing through the final episode of Season 1 has put me in a slightly different mindset. I'm going to put it out there right now, that ending almost made me shed bitter tears of sorrow. Not because I view it as weakness, not because I wanted a happy ending of dandelions and rainbow-colored ponies that defecate magical marshmallows; but because I knew from the moment Lee was bitten, the story would reach this conclusion. In spite of any decisions I made throughout the other episodes, or even this episode, there would be one final decision to be made at the end. Which brings up the question, Does it even matter?
We knew that Lee was going to die, whether from the bite or blood loss or a third factor, Lee was going to bite it. And the fact that dodging the walker's bite was not an option feels all the more out of our control, the game is forcing us to play by its rules, despite it's flagrant proclamations of player choice constantly effecting the game. But then we realize, it's not about our choices effecting the game, it's about the game giving us challenges and us making the decisions that we feel are best (aside from those people who make "bad" decisions just to be jerks). It's not about getting the highest score, it's about a horrible situation and studying how we would deal with it.
Because in the end, it's not Lee's story, nor is it Clementine's, it's our story. It's the story of the survivors of a Zombie apocalypse and we are it's co-authors.
I leave you with these questions
1. Are our decisions truly worthwhile, if we either have very differing choices or all the same?
2. What happened to Clem?
3. Would our choices be reflected on in the continuation of the series?
4. What happened to Clem?
5. Would we make decisions as morally grey as in this season in the next?
6. What the bloody hell happened to Clem?!
