After watching the pilot episode of The Walking Dead, I can already tell that the show will take a different approach than the comic book. Maybe I'm just being a purist, but I felt disappointed when I saw how much the episode deviated from it's source material. What really struck me the most was how the characters were handled differently, changing their personalities so that they seemed almost like different people. For me, if an adaptation is made, I want it to at least remain close to it's source material if they plan to utilize the same characters.
One of the biggest disappointments that I had with the show was the handling of Dwayne's father (I can't remember his name). In the comic, he seemed like a likeable guy, the type that you would want to have your back during a crisis like this. The way that he helped Rick without hesitation when they first met was one of my favorite moments. So when I saw how they made him into a more violent character from the very beginning, I was put off. Now, one could argue that this is probably a more "realistic" rendering, considering the situations that he's forced to put up with, but personally, I felt as though he was too over the top. In short, he's almost the exact opposite to his counterpart in the comics.
Like I said before, I'm probably just being a purist here, but if they had decided to make a new set of characters like they did for the videogame, I would probably be more forgiving of the series. Maybe the creator decided that change was necessary, but I personally like adaptations to be faithful.
