The Walking
Dead has become a big player in today’s pop culture entertainment. Based off
the comics by Robert Kirkman, the show has attracted viewers spanning all over
the world, solidifying it a pedestal in present media. The comic was published
in 2003 then several years later AMC aired the first episode the show, titling
the pilot Days Gone Bye. In tangent with the comic book the show does very well
illustrating many of the themes that are present in the comic. Arguably the
show does it better, giving the audience better visuals to push the themes
across. One example is Rick Grimes coping with this new world he has been
thrust into. Because of the film medium, the audience can catch the smallest
changes in Rick’s mood and expression, which the paper and ink cannot always do
as well as film. Another strength of the film medium that the show uses to its
advantage is the sounds. We has an audience can hear the actual sounds that the
character is hearing as well, this is usually more impactful than the drawn in
“Wapows!” that the comic medium utilizes for sound. Overall humans act off
experience, and in comparison to comics the film medium is sensually more
stimulating and immersive than it’s paper and ink counter part.
How did the
strength of reaction compare, when looking at the comic in comparison to the
show?
Did the
show take any creative liberties that deviated from the comic, and impacted it
in a negative way?
How did our
reactions to the characters differ from comic to show?
