The More Powerful Medium?
Many people have lost touch with the word of literature and embraced the cultural "lesser art" medium of television. But which of these mediums is more powerful and impacting? After watching the pilot of The Walking Dead, i found myself with the answer i was looking for. I found that the television adaptation to be more powerful than that of he comic or the video game. The first element that made this decision for me was the more in-depth conversations the characters had during the show. The amount of time that the show allowed gave the story and the character interactions to develop more meaningful messages and other values, while the short comic bubble only allow so much text given the page limits for each comic. Another element that made this medium better was the further development of the characters. My example of this is the father and son that Rick mets right after he wakes up (both from the hospital and the concussion of the shovel to the head) into the hellish nightmare of a world everything is now. In the comic they were just a fatherland son the rick came across and helped, but the show took it three steps farther. The gave s the story about how there was a wife but she died because of the bite and they couldn't kill her because he loved her way too much to do it. They also show the seriousness of the father with the multiple death threats that he gave to rick. They also made Lori a more horrible character by not only making her the cheating wife, but she is also the stuck up woman that thinks she's right about everything and then blames others for things she didn't pursue.
