Adaptations, when and where

The when and where of adaptations makes a lot of interesting and right and wrong points.  I have always looked at adaptations as well adaptations.  You have a book or play or whatever it might be and it is adapted into something else.  I have never taken into consideration the time of which adaptations are created as well as the nationality of the creator or rather where the adaptation is being released.  I have known that not every adaptation is going to be perfect as it is the artist interpretation of the work, yet I have not taken into consideration their back ground.  As in the reading Kurwasawas throne of blood is an adaptation of Macbeth.  And because the director is Japanese the characters, reactions, story, setting everything will be different because of their culture.  In my opinion it is almost as if you have an entirely new work of art and not an adaptation of anything.

One thing however that I feel is a bit incorrect in the reading is that the artist create around the time and culture of their adaptation.  I think this is completely true if the artist is purely trying to make a lot of money.  If they know something is not going to do well in a certain country or a certain subject matter isn't going to fit too well into the society then they won't do it.  For example a lot of violence is ok in America, but show tasteful nudity and the riots start.  If an artist is going to be true to themselves then they will make an adaptation based on what they believe and their culture not the world around them.
