The first scene of the play was a little confusing because it
looked too modern to be Shakespeare’s Macbeth but later I liked Rupert Goold’s
reinterpretation of setting and I think it added an interesting aspect. The
witches seemed almost creepier as nurses than they would’ve been as regular
witches. Otherwise the tone of the play/movie stayed pretty close to that of
Shakespeare’s play, which was appreciated. The casting and setting selection
was very successful in getting the feel of the play. Besides changing setting,
Rupert Goold’s Macbeth stays pretty close to the script of Shakespeare’s
original.
I really thought the acting was an
important part in the play’s success. The acting of the three witches really
brought them to life and their expressions and voices make the witches even
creepier. Lady Macbeth seemed completely believable in her actions and you felt
like she was a real person and not just a character in the play. You could feel
how Lady Macbeth was feeling as she went crazy throughout the play and was
plagued with guilt. Patrick Stewart as Macbeth was captivating and he could
make even the calmer scenes more interesting. The play is a very famous one and
Goold does well to respect its original form but make some changes to scene and
setting that make it even better. The sounds and lighting used really enhanced
the mood the play has throughout. Scenes I really liked were when the witches
meet with Macbeth because you can really tell how he changes from the first
time to the second time and they show how much control and manipulation the
witches have on Macbeth. Patrick Stewart clearly shows how Macbeth changes and
gets more greedy for power and paranoid by the end of the play.
