When I read this article, I had to admit that the author had some good points to make on the monstrosity of the zombie. I do, however, think that she may have missed a point about vampires: while zombies are seen as monsters because of their lack of humanity, vampires are monstrous because they are so human.
The thing that made the classical vampire so frightening wasn't it's monstrous powers or appearance, it was that it had such a demonic personality. They were narcissistic, sadistic, licentious, etc., all of which are traits that any human can posses as well. Their physical beauty, immortality, and prestigious lifestyles were all meant to appeal to mankind's basic desires and fear of death so as to make them seem all the more tempting.
In truth, I don't think that the vampire has lost the potential horror that they had in modern society, I just think that it takes a more creative mind to fit them into our era. Not to mention, books and series like Twilight and True Blood are intentionally trying to portray the vampire as a sympathetic character, just like how Warm Bodies tried to do the same thing with the zombie. The vampire can make a comeback, if the author is willing.
