Vampires v. Zombies
It is very interesting to note the shift that vampires have taken through recent years. In Dracula era and even before that, they were menacing, seductive monsters who were to be feared and disposed of. People used to dedicate their lives trying to get rid of zombies, using wooden steaks and crosses and garlic to defend themselves from these monsters. Shift to today's society, and vampires play a different role. They now represent the pinnacle of society: effervescent youth and sparkling beauty. They have access to an immortal fountain of youth, a point of jealousy in today's society that so values youth and beauty. Instead of fearing them, we want to be them. It is almost every person of Western culture's dream to be forever young, able bodied, and good-looking. The point in our lives from late adolescence to early 30s when we are seen as our most able bodied and good looking are revered as the apex of our short lives. Concerns with vanity overrule more important things, and with each birthday we curse the gods for another year. Vampires have it all, and this is why the modern vampire is so popular today. Also noting, we no longer have to be afraid of vampires because they suddenly have grown a respect for human life, and spare humans in favor of animals. This puts everyone at better ease with modern vampires, because in theory, they eat animals just like regular people. Modern vampires also have the capacity to love and show other feelings, which devlops an easier connection. Furthermore, zombies have become the new force to be reckoned with. They are a sign of the end of times. Everything in the world has gone wrong if our dead are coming back to eat our flesh. They represent the opposite of the beauty that modern day vampires flaunt. They are unsightly pseudo humans that have decaying flesh. They are normally missing extremities, have dirty clothes, and are mindless. They are not the people that we might have known them as before. In a true zombie apocalypse, the last thing one would want would be to turn into one of the undead. The article also notes that zombies are the new top of the food chain, which is an unsettling thought. Through depictions in movies such as World War Z, turning into a zombie takes mere seconds. Your mother, father, brother, sister, girlfriend, anyone could be completely normal and then everything will change permanently form one simple bite to the flesh. Or in The Walking Dead, where even the living are infected and will turn once they die, unless shot in the head, the fear of turning is so widespread, because it is easy. In order to turn into a vampire, it is harder and more strenuous, with plenty of time to reverse the condition. In conclusion, vanity and societal changes have shifted the idea of a traditional vampire and made them much more charismatic, while exacerbating the idea of a post-apocalyptic world in which there are very few survivors.
