Reaction to Macbeth film
The scene in the very beginning of the movie in which the witches are revealing the prophecy to Banquo and Macbeth is the most striking to me for many reasons. Firstly, the witches are all cast in a fluorescent overhead light, giving them a ghastly pallor. The lighting serves to give the witches a very eerie, extraterrestrial, god-like feel, which adds to their ambiguity as humans who are more than just humans. This lighting also shows the audience that these women are potentially dangerous, and their unhealthy and death-like skin gives a sinister feel about them, one that knows that they cannot be trusted. Alongside their pale skin, their lips are blue and chapped which certainly adds to the feeling that they are lifeless. Furthermore, the witches are standing in a triangle, which is a direct reference and attack to the idea of the Holy Trinity. This serves as an indication of the black magic they practice, which goes against everything the Holy Trinity would stand for. Their defiance is also a symbol of fearlessness, because they are not afraid of God and do not adhere to any kind of religion, which was unheard of in that time during history. Lastly, there were many close ups on the witches faces, which gave an unsettling feeling of direct contact. It felt as if they were actually talking to you, and looking deeply into your insecurities. This makes their message resonate in your psyche, because it is hard to forget when her blue eyes are piercing into you.
