Goold's Macbeth

My initial reaction to the film was how easy it actually was to watch. I was worried that it would be difficult to follow, but found that asides from being extremely close to the actual Shakespeare script in both scenes and dialogue, it held my interest very well. This adaptation reminded me, vaguely, of the earlier adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with how it takes place in a different time period, but keeps true to the dialogue of the original play. The next thing to really stand out to me in the film was the adapters use of the nurses as the Weird Sisters. The concept of caregivers was twisted into characters that kept the events of the story in motion. It also gave the over-all feeling of the power the three witches held, as nurses generally have the power to save or condemn lives, much like the power the witches had over the characters with their magic and incantations. Something that also stood out to me, and seemed to stand out to others, was the usage of colored lighting during certain films, such as the introduction of Lady Macbeth. The green lighting gave the over-all effect of other-worldliness, or a sinister feeling. The first scene of the witches in the hospital hallway also had a very high contrast of light to dark throughout the hallway giving a mysterious and dangerous look to the shot. The scene with Lady Macbeth and Macbeth before the dinner was bathed in a red light, and gave the scene the sense of panic or enclosement, which is what I believe both Macbeth's would have been feeling at that point. The over-all lighting and scenery of this film gave it a very dark and foreboding feel, which was obviously the goal of the adapters.

My questions are:
1.) There were many time periods that this film could have also been set. Do you think there is any particular reason the director/adapter chose to use this WWI/WWII era setting?
2.) Do you think that if the film would have been shot on a set other then a military base/bunker it would have been viewed in a different way? Meaning, if it was shot with a set more like a large manor or on a military ship, would it have felt different to the viewer?
