This is about the most serious and academic article I've read on the trend of vampies and zombies in pop culture. I have noticed this trend really exploding in the last 5 years or so since twilight. Growing up the two seemed like two of many long standing cultural horror types but recently they have become at the forefront. I think this article gets too serious about things. I think vampires are so popular because of twilight. And the vampires are always young sexy guys in movies and shows. Girls are just looking at young sexy guys here. They could be vampires or some other type of monstrous hot young guy.
Zombies I don't know about. I think they're gross and were always very boring until they started running. I feel like a group of strong samurai could take down waves of walking zombies at their most threatening so they aren't that compelling. Running zombies are alright but still could be replaced but something better like werewolves. I have always thought werewolves are the scariest monsters. I think it taps into a primal fear that we have, as children especially, that some animal will eat us. Also bigfoot type monsters scare me a lot.
I think there's some good points about cultural significance in the article, but I also think you can make points like that for a lot of things that become popular. I'm still not sold on zombies and vampires.
