The meaning of a story or the lesson that the story are as important when it comes to an adaptation as the way that the elements of the film are used s well. When adapting a source material into something more modern, such as a folk tale into a novel or a novel into a movie, a key concept that one must keep in mind is modernizing the message itself so that it can be interrupted by the modern audience in a way that the message is the same but they will be able to understand it in their own way. Hutcheon comments that the Romans and the Greeks did adaptations from each other's cultures and when they did so, they changed the story to meet the cultural beliefs of their own. This concept of "cultural globalization" as Huctheon calls it has lead to a closer analysis of adaptations between cultures in recent years. A prime example of this is the adaptation of Macbeth by Kurosawa to the Japanese culture to a movie that is known as "Throne of Blood" which infuses the story with the cultural ideals and practices during the time of feudal Japan. Hollywood also took one of his movies, The Seven Samurai, and created the film which is known in our culture as The Magnificant Seven. this transition from Japanese to American cultures requires that the story and the message to be altered so that it can be understood by the culture. The where of the adaptation is very important, but what is also just as important is the when. The transition of time impacts the adaptation arguably more so than that of the location. A book written say 50 years ago is meant to target the audience of that time and thus the plot and how the message is given needs to be changed to meet the time difference. Some work, such as Hamlet, are considered timeless works that have messages the apply to all generations, such as the quest for vengeance, betrayal, the lose or finding of love, and many more concepts can be directly adapted with little to no changes. The important concepts have further deepened my understanding of what is needed for these adaptation to be successful.
Questions:
How important is the transition of time and how can this transition effect the meaning of the source material?
